Teacher discounts teach philosophy, but not history
Posted by Fox News on November 12, 2018 12:33:28Teachers are taking advantage of a $100 rebate on textbooks offered by the United States Department of Education.
The department announced Tuesday that students will be able to use the $100 discount on textbooks from any teacher who has a PhD in the discipline of history.
This will allow them to get a free book if they choose to purchase the textbook through a university, and it will help them to save money for their next book purchase.
“The Department of the Education’s goal is to provide an affordable resource that students can use to get their history and math skills up to date and prepare for college, career, and international study,” said Betsy DeVos, assistant secretary for education.
The department will also offer a $30 scholarship to students in the United Kingdom, which will be used to cover the cost of a student’s tuition for the 2019-20 academic year.
The program will be open to any teacher with a PhD degree.
According to the department’s website, the Department of History has been offering the discount for about a decade.
The Education Department began the program in 2005, with a goal of reducing the cost to the taxpayer of a textbook by 10 to 20 percent.
In 2018, the department announced a $2 million scholarship to help teachers and students buy books that will be available to all students from 2018 through 2021.
